Gareth and I had a long weekend in Madrid in the middle of July, a friendly city that is not just aimed at tourists.  Great place to go especially if you explore using their subway system.  you might be advised to go earlier in the year or later as July and August are HOT and some places close so the locals can go on holiday (nice if you can take a two month  break!).  The gay district is surprisingly large and friendly with some really good places to eat also in the area.
